Our Story
A Family-Owned Fish and Chips Tradition Since 1965
For nearly sixty years, Cockney Kings has been proudly serving classic, English-style fish and chips to communities across Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster.
What began as a small family shop has grown into a local favourite known for warm hospitality, quality ingredients and a commitment to honest, comforting food.
A FAMILY EFFORT
Cockney Kings began in 1965, inspired by a small fish and chip shop in Victoria owned by close family friends. At the time, Len Evans was working in construction but wanted a change and a chance to build something of his own. He and his wife Joan spent months perfecting their batter at home before opening their first shop on East Hastings, serving honest, British-style comfort food at a fair price.
CARRYING THE TRADITION FORWARD
In the mid-eighties, their daughter Lee and her husband Norm carried the family tradition into the next generation. The spirit of the restaurant continued to grow as long-time staff joined the team, many of whom stayed for decades and brought in siblings, partners, friends and even their children to work alongside them.
GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY
One of those young team members was Daniel Turner, who started as an eleven-year-old dishwasher in 1984. Over the years, Daniel grew with the business, eventually marrying his fellow co-worker Kristi. In 1999, they took over the New Westminster location and later the Burnaby shop as well. Today, their three daughters continue the family connection by working part-time in New Westminster.
NEW CHAPTERS
In 2023, long-time staff member and former Burnaby manager, Greg, opened the Kitsilano location, adding another chapter to the Cockney Kings family story.
In early 2026, Daniel and Kristi opened our Main Street location in Mount Pleasant, continuing our commitment to bringing classic fish and chips to more Vancouver communities.
LOOKING AHEAD
Nearly sixty years later, we’re still guided by the same principles we started with: quality ingredients, generous portions, and service that makes you feel right at home.
As our family grows, so does our connection to the communities we serve. We’re grateful for the generations of loyal guests who’ve supported us, and excited to welcome new ones into the Cockney Kings story.
